My Mountbatten Experience

Coming to London from Nigeria was a big leap for me both professionally and personally. At 25 years old, I had built quite a foundation in communications, working in the communications department of a major commercial bank in Nigeria. But I felt there was more I could do, more I could learn, and more opportunities out there that could expand my horizons. This search for growth and opportunity led me to the Mountbatten Program.

What Attracted Me to the Mountbatten Program

The Mountbatten Program offers a unique combination of professional placement, cultural exchange, and career development. My first introduction to the program was through a colleague who had heard about the program while she lived in London. I did a bit more research and the program seemed like an ideal way to take my career to the next level. I was particularly attracted by the prospect of working in a fast-paced, international environment and gaining hands-on experience.

Before joining the program, my background in communications was centered around digital/social media marketing, customer relations, and a bit of event management. While I had learned a great deal in that role, I was eager to broaden my skill set and explore new industries. The Mountbatten Program offered the perfect opportunity to work in a different sector while still fostering my personal and professional growth. It was a chance to see how technology, and marketing converge in today’s world and to develop expertise in areas that I hadn’t explored before.

Additionally, the idea of immersing myself in London’s dynamic and multicultural work environment was highly appealing. I had always wanted to work in an international setting, and London is one of the global hubs for business and innovation. The Mountbatten Program promised not only professional development but also a chance to learn from and network with professionals from all over the world.

The most valuable thing I’ve learned or experienced so far

Since I started my placement with Octus, a technology and data company, in November 2024, the most valuable thing I’ve learned is adaptability. Working in the Growth Marketing and Event Management department, I’ve had to adapt to new technologies and processes. The pace at which technology evolves, especially in marketing and analytics, is something I had never fully appreciated until now. At first, I felt overwhelmed by the level of advanced tools and technology used for daily activities but as I kept working in the company I got more comfortable with new tools and software. I’m learning a lot about marketing tools, event management software, cutting-edge marketing strategies, data-driven decision-making and project management tools that I hadn’t encountered before. The learning curve has been steep, but the environment at Octus is supportive, and the team is always willing to share insights and tips, making the transition smoother.

If a friend were considering the program, what I would tell them

If a friend were considering the Mountbatten Program, I would tell them it’s an opportunity they shouldn’t miss. It’s a comprehensive experience that offers both professional and personal growth. The program isn’t just about securing a placement, it’s about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, learning new skills, and immersing yourself in a new culture.

I would emphasize that while the program provides incredible career development, it also demands flexibility and a willingness to adapt. Whether it’s adjusting to a new industry, learning new tools, or navigating cultural differences, there are always challenges. But these challenges are what make the experience so enriching.

The personal development aspect of the program is just as important as the professional one. Living and working in London has made me more independent and self-confident. I’ve had the chance to explore the city, meet people from different cultures, and gain a deeper understanding of global business practices. It’s a chance to see the world through a different lens and grow both as a professional and as an individual.

What I have enjoyed most about my Mountbatten experience

As I reflect on my Mountbatten experience, one of the things I’ve enjoyed most is the sense of community. I’ve felt welcomed and supported by fellow Mountbatten participants. What is interesting is that we’re all on a similar journey of professional development and cultural exchange. Whether it’s attending social events, sharing advice, or exploring the city together, the community aspect of the program has been a highlight of my experience.

So far, my experience on the Mountbatten Program has been nothing short of transformative. From the professional development I’ve gained in my placement with Octus to the personal growth that comes with living in a new city, every aspect of the program has exceeded my expectations. It’s been a journey of learning, adaptation, and exploration, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
