A Day In The Life
Program: New York
Intake: September 2006
Current Role: Performance Director for Women’s Cricket
My Alarm Goes off… Typically at 6am, then out to walk our dog. I usually get a chance for a quiet coffee before waking the rest of the family up and start getting the kids both ready for school.
I’m Responsible For… The women’s cricket strategy at Lancashire Cricket, one of the largest county cricket clubs in England. I primarily focus on the performance aspects from the recruitment and management of our squad of 22 players, the coaching structure and ensuring that our sports science and medicine department aligns into our performance objectives. The women’s game has been on a transformative journey since 2020 and it’s exciting to now have the first fully professional squad in the country.
I Got The Job… in early 2020 and started just before all of the covid restrictions kicked in. This made it an incredibly challenging first nine months in the role, trying to navigate a changing landscape whilst tasked with creating our first squad ahead of fixtures in August 2020. I have a background working in women’s cricket at the International Cricket Council and in performance sport at England Boxing, so the combination must have struck the right note with Lancs!
My Typical Day… It’s very different in the winter and the cricket season. The winter (November – March) has a regular training schedule for players, so I plan meetings with players and staff around sessions to maximise my time at Emirates Old Trafford. As well as managing the player development plans, we regularly review our talent depth plans to ensure we are doing what we can to optimise the development of talented players coming through our Academy and age group teams. As March comes, we will head out to Dubai and then India for our pre-season camp to ensure the team are in the best condition ahead of the season starting in April. Once the season starts, the schedule of matches will dictate training plans, and I try to be around as much as I can though it can become quite consuming with the amount of travel and hotel stays.
The Culture Of My Workplace… Very positive with an emphasis across the Club on being inclusive, driven and positive. The women’s players and staff enjoy the environment but also push themselves hard to be the best they can be, and we seek to give regular feedback so that we all continue to develop
My Most Memorable Work Moment… Helping our coaches and players run a fun coaching session for children at the Oval Maidan in Mumbai. It’s a large public park in Mumbai with dozens of cricket matches going on at the same time, often overlapping boundaries with other matches!
My Role Models are… too many to mention! I have been fortunate to work with many excellent leaders in sport and take a lot from those who have influenced me in different ways
The Most Challenging Part of My Job… I have to have a lot of challenging conversations in my role but the most challenging part is when we decide to not renew a player’s contract. This might mean that a player is leaving a Club they have been at for a long time or have a home/family in the area but we need to make decisions on what is best for the Club.
The Best Part of My Job… The feeling in the dressing room after a win (we need more wins in 2025!) but also, I’m fortunate to be the one who offers players their first professional contract, so seeing the reaction of young players brings a smile always
After Work… Usually spending time with my family and taking the kids to various sport classes or matches. I am trying to play golf more regularly also now.
Plan B: If I wasn’t doing this, I would… I think I would be working in sport somewhere, it’s always positive and with great people.
