Mountbatten internship:
Risk & Control Analyst

What and where did you study before your Mountbatten internship?
Biomedical Sciences at the University of Manchester

What made you apply for the Mountbatten program?
I randomly bumped into a school friend I hadn’t seen for years, and we were just catching up. She did Mountbatten which I had never heard of before. That same day, I Googled ‘Mountbatten Program’ and saw it was a great opportunity to live and work in NYC, so jumped at the chance!

Describe your sponsor company and your role within it.
I was part of a small group who flew out later than the main cohort and I ended up working at UBS….in Connecticut. It was an interesting commute to say the least! I was in the Risk and Control Team, where I monitored accounts for suspicious movements across 15 teams.

What was the highlight/most memorable moment of your working experience during this year?
I would say walking the UBS trading floor and getting a tour of the New York Stock Exchange by one of the traders.

What was the social highlight/most memorable moment during this year?
There were so many! Free summer concerts in the park featuring various music legends, renting a house in the Hamptons for Christmas with fellow Mountbattens, and travelling to other US cities including Atlanta and San Francisco.

Please share a little wisdom/philosophy that you acquired during your internship
Be bold and fly your own flag.

Upon reflection, what do you consider has been the biggest impact of your Mountbatten year?
Having the courage to do things that I didn’t plan for, are part of the plan. Even if I don’t realise it at the time!

What happened after completing the year – what did you do next?
I worked for various pharmaceutical consultancies.

Where are you now in your working life and what do you do?
I’m a business adviser but have a new side hustle as a copywriter and content strategist for businesses that want to commercialise their online presence.

Do you have any future plans that you would like to realise & what are they (career & social)?
Following feedback from clients as I grow my copywriting and content strategy business, I’ve started a YouTube video podcast called ‘Hear the Hustle’ – www.youtube.com/@HearTheHustle, where I interview entrepreneurs, business owners, side hustlers (whichever term you prefer!), to find out the various methods they use to raise money to scale their ventures. Many business owners were telling me that getting funding is difficult, so ‘Hear the Hustle’, shares real-life knowledge and tips about business funding from those who have succeeded and failed (but learnt invaluable lessons). I know there are many extraordinary entrepreneurs in the Mountbatten Alumni network and would love to share your funding stories too! Let’s chat – adelina@purposecopywriter.com.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a Liverpool FC fan and no I’m not from Liverpool and have not visited the city….yet!

Is there any other information that you would like to be included?
