Mountbatten Institute - New York DB Programme
VISAS AND WORK PERMITS
Citizenship Requirements:
The Mountbatten Institute's New York programme is open only to non-American citizens. By law, if you possess dual citizenship (i.e. American and Indian) and are planning to enter the country, you must do so on your American passport. As an American citizen, you do not qualify for Exchange Visitor status (J-1 Visa) and are, therefore, ineligible for the programme.
If you possess dual nationality of both India and the United States, you may however apply to join the DBOI GS Junior Leadership Programme in London, provided you do not also possess citizenship in any part of the European Community or the European Economic Area (including Switzerland) or have a 'right of abode' or 'permanent residency' in the United Kingdom.
Your J-1 Visa is issued by the US State Department at the request of the Institute after you have been offered work placement in the programme. Some conditions do apply, however, and specifically the requirement that you DO NOT remain in the country at the end of your internship year. Immigration authorities are quite strict about this provision and no exceptions can be made. The Institute also reserves the right to cancel a visa and require immediate repatriation if, in the opinion of the Institute, the participant has failed to conduct himself/herself in an appropriate way, including any misrepresentation of citizenship status.
Candidates who have studied or worked previously in America on a J-1 visa may be subject to the J-1 Visa ‘Two Years Home Residency Requirement (212E)'. This requirement states that a J-1 Visa holder may not return on another J-1 programme until 2 years have passes since returning home. If you are uncertain, you should check with your local US consular representative to determine your eligibility for the Mountbatten sponsored J-1 Visa.
Procedures:
Following your interview and confirmation of placement with Deutsche Bank, you will receive, from our New York office, two forms issued by the State Department: DS-2019 and DS-7002. They must be taken to the nearest US Embassy with a completed application form which you can download from the Embassy website. You will need to make an appointment to be interviewed by a consular officer at the US Embassy who will inspect all of your documentation and discuss with you your Deutsche Bank training programme.
