Mountbatten Institute - New York DB Programme
VISAS AND WORK PERMITS
Citizenship Requirements:

Our New York internship programme is only open to non-American citizens.  Under current U.S. laws, if you possess dual nationality (i.e. U.S. and Thai or U.S./Indian) and you are planning to enter the U.S., you can only do so on your US passport.  As an American citizen you do not qualify for Exchange Visitor status (J-1 Visa) and, therefore, are ineligible for our programme.

U.S. citizens who reside outside of the United States, including those with dual nationality, can apply to join our London programme, and application can be made through our North American Regional Office.  American citizens, however, who also possess citizenship of European Community or European Economic Area countries (including Switzerland) or who have ‘right of abode’ or ‘permanent residency’ in the US, are ineligible for our New York programme.

Your J-1 Visa is issued by the U.S. State Department on the request of Mountbatten after you have been offered a work placement in the programme.  Some conditions do apply, however, specifically the requirement that you DO NOT remain in the U.S. on the conclusion of your internship year.  The U.S. immigration authorities are quite strict about this provision and no exceptions can be made.  The programme also reserves the right to cancel an interns visa and require immediate repatriation if, in the opinion of the programme, the intern has failed to conduct himself/herself in an appropriate way.

Candidates who have studied or worked in America under a US government sponsored J-1 programme prior to their application to join Mountbatten may be subject to the J-1 Visa ‘Two Years Home Residency Requirement (212E)'.  This requirement insists that a J-1 Visa holder does not return to the USA under another J-1 programme unless resident in their home country for at least 2 years after completing their previous American J-1 Programme.  If you are in this category you should check with your local US consular representative to determine your eligibility for the Mountbatten sponsored J-1 Visa.

Procedures:

Following your interview and confirmation of a placement with Deutsche Bank, you will receive, from our New York office, two forms issued by the U.S. State Department: DS-2019 and Form DS-7002.  They must be taken to the nearest U.S. Embassy with a completed application form which you can download from the Embassy website.  You will need to make an appointment to be interviewed by a consular officer at the U.S. Embassy who will inspect all of your documentation and discuss, with you, your Deutsche Bank training proramme.
