LIVING IN NEW YORK

Good accommodation in and around New York is very expensive, involves substantial security deposits, typically two months rent in advance, and possibly legal fees.  There are also many pitfalls for the unwary, and the whole business of finding and negotiating accommodation that meets your requirements can be very time-consuming indeed.  Mountbatten, therefore, provides its own halls of residence for interns, usually in two or three bedroom apartments (flats).  Our apartments represent a substantial saving to interns while holding to the Mountbatten philosophy of centralized accommodation.  They are also centrally located and managed by our staff.  In short, you will be better able to focus on your work placement and enjoy the many other aspects of your year abroad.  Interns are required to live in Mountbatten-designated accommodation rather than with friends, family or otherwise privately.

Living in Newport

Accommodation is provided free of charge.  Interns share furnished flats in modern high-rise apartment buildings maintained by the Mountbatten Internship Programme in Newport, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from the Financial District in downtown Manhattan and about five minutes walk from the nearest PATH (underground train) station.  The journey time to 33rd Street (mid-town Manhattan) is about 20 minutes.

The apartments are self-contained, and include cooking facilities, two bathrooms, a spacious lounge, and ample storage space.  Each has three bedrooms accommodating 5 - 6 interns per apartment.  Additional services and facilities include a 24-hour doorman, security, a laundry room, intercom, and concierge.  You will be sharing a room with another intern throughout the year.  Rooms in our apartments are always single sex.  While most of the apartments are co-ed (mixed), women can request single sex apartments and the Programme will do its best to honour such requests.

Accommodation is quite complex to administer in New York.  After many years of experience the Programme has developed the arrangements described above and is keen to continue them (subject only to changes dictated by circumstances).  However we do recognize that living arrangements are a personal matter that can make an important contribution to your well-being throughout the year.  Thus, if you feel you could not readily accept Mountbatten's arrangements, particularly concerning shared rooms and little choice in location and accommodation, we recommend you do not apply for the Programme.

The Programme is obliged to provide accommodation, for which it contracts, and pays, in advance.  Interns are expected to live in our apartments and not make private accommodation arrangements.
