Mountbatten Institute - New York DB Programme
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

In addition to a year's full-time work experience at Deutsche Bank in New York, you will also participate in a Postgraduate Certificate programme comprising evening seminars and study weekends in New York.  Successful graduates will receive the Postgraduate Certificate in International Business Practice (PGC).  The coursework leading to this award is co-produced by St Mary’s University College, London, and the Mountbatten Institute, and its successful completion provides each intern with a personal record of achievement and tangible evidence of a successful year of work experience and training.

St Mary’s University College validates and awards the PGC and this relationship with St Mary’s underpins the philosophy and methodology used throughout the Mountbatten year in New York.

St Mary's Campus

The PGC syllabus

The PGC comprises three courses: Management Principles and Practices, Managing People in Organisations and the International Business Environment.  Classes for each course are delivered via 50 contact hours of evening and weekend seminars and are supported by on-line learning.

The PGC and all of its components are mandatory

The PGC is central to the Mountbatten Institute.  The work experience coupled with living in and enjoying the host country provides the context of the program.  The PGC quantifies and evaluates the personal and organisational experience.

Assessment

Upon completion of the three courses described above, and before being awarded the PGC, students will have proposed and developed three research papers, one for each course.  These papers, along with participation in groups and class discussions, provide ample opportunity for each student to demonstrate the skills necessary for successful and effective research and the ability to apply those skills in the workplace.  This experiential postgraduate certificate provides exposure to core business practices and management theories within an international context.  Graduates learn through the application of real-life experience and are able to relate their work placement to the material covered.

Participants in the PGC will produce work commensurate with the value of the award, which is of Master’s degree level.  Assignments, which must be the original work of the student, will include at least two case study reports, a 3,000-word assignment for each course, one work-based report and a reflective journal of at least 1,500 words.  A group presentation and class participation in each course will also be assessed.  All assignments will be graded by the subject professor; written and on-line assignments will be moderated by examiners appointed by St Mary's University College.

Seminars

In Summary - what will you receive if you pass all aspects of the Mountbatten Programme?

You will receive the Postgraduate Certificate in International Business Practice awarded and validated by St Mary’s University College, in partnership with the Mountbatten Institute.  The PGC is fully accredited and carries the academic equivalent of one third of an MBA.

You will find the PGC to be a powerful resource as you enter the job market or embark on the next phase of your career.  Apart from the documentary evidence of a productive year, the PGC becomes, for many, an eye-catching focus for discussion in interviews, allowing former interns to present their accomplishments.

The programme is unique in that it offers a twelve-month work assignment integrated with a validated academic program of study.  If you do not feel able to commit wholeheartedly to the academic programme or to the internship, the Mountbatten year would not be right for you.
