Mountbatten Institute - New York Programme
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

Mountbatten's unique integrative learning curriculum combines a year's full time work experience at one of our sponsor companies in New York with participation in an education and training programme.  Interns are required to choose between either:

1. The Certificate in International Business Practice
or
2. The Diploma in International Business Practice (leading to the MBA)

Participation in either the Certificate or Diploma is mandatory.

All interns must complete all components of one of the academic options (Certificate or Diploma) in addition to their full time work placement with a New York sponsor company.  If you feel that you are unable to commit wholeheartedly to either the Certificate or the Diploma, the Mountbatten Internship Programme would not be right for you.

AIC-Mountbatten MBA launch

The Mountbatten Institute, the parent body of the prestigious Mountbatten Internship Programme, is pleased to announce a partnership with American International College (AIC) and the introduction of the AIC/Mountbatten MBA.

The AIC/Mountbatten MBA is the first MBA which combines a year-long practical training internship in New York with international business course work, leading to a Diploma in International Business Practice (Part I of the MBA).

The Diploma carries US academic credit and can be combined with an optional semester (Part II of MBA) of intensive academic study in Asia to earn an MBA in International Business Practice awarded by American International College (AIC) and the Mountbatten Institute.

CERTIFICATE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PRACTICE

The work placement together with evening and some weekend courses, projects, workshops, and on-going appraisal lead to the Certificate in International Business Practice.  This is the central component of the Mountbatten Programme, providing each intern with tangible evidence of a successful year of work experience and training.

As of May 2003, Mountbatten's Certificate has been integrated with two modules of the Cambridge International Diploma in Management at Professional level, a section of the Cambridge Management Awards offered by the University of Cambridge International Examinations.  The Mountbatten Programme is an accredited centre for these awards.

To qualify for the Certificate in International Business Practice, an intern must:

  • Successfully complete 12 months' Work Experience.  The intern is evaluated twice by the sponsor company for progress and performance in competencies.
  • Define a Learning Contract, specifying goals and objectives for the internship year.
  • Maintain a written Professional Development Journal recording the experiences, observations and accomplishments of the year and submit three summaries related to the Learning Contract for assessment.
  • Attend and participate each week in evening and occasional weekend Seminars.  These cover aspects of US History, Constitution and Politics; American Cultural Studies; Career Management; and a programme of seminars and workshops in US Business Practice that includes two out of four management modules assigned in consultation with the intern's sponsor company:  Managing Information, Managing the Market, Managing Teams, Managing Finance.  The intern is assessed in the seminar units based on attendance, active participation in class, individual and group projects, written research assignments, and oral presentations.
  • Write two 3,000 word Research Assignments, one each for the two Cambridge business management modules.  These two projects will address key business and management skills and will develop competencies (such as public speaking and presentation, business writing and team building) that should enhance interns' contributions to their sponsor companies.  Upon successful completion of each assignment, interns receive module certificates from Cambridge International Examinations.  These certificates stand alone in their own right, much like Cambridge A Levels.

In sum, interns will be eligible to receive 3 certificates - one from Mountbatten and two from Cambridge International Examinations.

Returning interns have found the Mountbatten Certificate to be a powerful resource as they enter the job market or embark on the next phase of their careers.  Apart from the documentary evidence of a productive year, the Certificate becomes an eye-catching focus for discussion in interviews, allowing interns to present their New York accomplishments.

University of Cambridge Accreditation

The Mountbatten Institute (the umbrella organization to which the London and New York Mountbatten Internship Programmes belong) is an Associate Partner of the University of Cambridge International Examinations ("CIE").  www.cie.org.uk/aboutcie/centres/associate

DIPLOMA IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PRACTICE (PART I OF MBA DEGREE PROGRAM)

The Diploma forms Part I of a newly established MBA degree program, which has been developed by the Mountbatten Institute (the parent body of the Mountbatten Internship Programme) in conjunction with American International College, School of Business Administration (AIC) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.

The Diploma is designed for interns who are working in complex international organizations and need the basic tools of business understanding to perform their jobs effectively.  The programme further assists the intern by relating what he or she sees at the office to a larger global business perspective.

Interns who successfully complete Part I will receive the Diploma in International Business Practice from the Mountbatten Institute and American International College, as well as a transcript from AIC's School of Business Administration listing successful completion of the courses, the grades received and the number of credits awarded.

MBA IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PRACTICE (PART II OF MBA DEGREE PROGRAM) IN BANGKOK

Those interns who successfully complete the Diploma (Part I of the MBA) will have the option of completing Part II of the MBA degree programme (worth 18 graduate credits) in Asia following their year in New York.  This segment of the MBA programme builds on the understanding of business theory and techniques that students have acquired in Part I and expands this understanding by focusing on current trends and challenges in the Asian markets.

What value is AIC Accreditation?

Founded in 1886, AIC is a leading liberal arts college located in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA with an established School of Business.  AIC is accredited by both the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.

The award of graduate credit from AIC is a unique expression of the partnership between the Mountbatten Institute and American higher education and represents a new development for our organization.  AIC's School of Business Administration, based in Springfield, MA, oversees the delivery and exercises quality control over assessment and achievement for the Diploma in International Business Practice.  AIC graduate credits are fully transferable to AIC, in the event that interns wish to complete their MBA at AIC.  Acceptance of credits outside of AIC is dependent on individual university policies and degree requirements.
