Mountbatten Institute - London UBS Programme
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

In addition to a year's full time work experience at UBS in London, you will also participate in a Mountbatten Programme education and training course comprising evening seminars and residential study weekends in London.  Success on this program leads to the award of the Certificate in International Business Practice.  This is a central component of your Programme placement, and it provides each intern with a personal record of achievement, and tangible evidence of a successful year of work experience and training.

The University of Cambridge International Examinations ("CIE") has fully accredited the Mountbatten Internship Programme as a Cambridge Associate Partner.  This relationship underpins the philosophy and methodology used throughout the programme.

The Certificate syllabus covers
  • Social, economic, historical and political aspects of the UK and Europe.
  • Key aspects of International business and work experience.  This includes registration for and study of two modules of the Cambridge University International Diploma in Management at Professional Level.
  • A review of personal and career development during your year.  The purpose of the Certificate program is to develop cultural awareness and understanding and to provide conditions where graduates can acquire management skills and knowledge while improving their personal and business competence.

The Mountbatten Certificate and all of its components are mandatory

The Certificate is central to the Mountbatten Internship Programme.  The work experience coupled with living in and enjoying the host country provides the context of the program.  The Certificate quantifies and evaluates the personal and organisational experience.  So if you do not feel able to commit wholeheartedly to the Certificate, the Mountbatten Programme would not be right for you.

To qualify for the award of the Certificate in International Business Practice, you must:
  1. Develop a Learning Contract in partnership with your UBS supervisor, specifying expected goals and objectives for the internship year.  This provides the starter benchmarks against which you will measure your progress and development throughout the year.
  2. Maintain a written Personal Development Journal which records experience, observations and reflection on progress.  For assessment, you must submit quarterly summaries referenced against the Learning Contract.
  3. Complete a successful period of one year's full time Work Experience at UBS.  Assessment for this component is through two appraisals of progress and individual performance against agreed competencies provided by UBS to the Mountbatten Institute.
  4. Attend and participate in a schedule of evening and weekend Mountbatten Programme Seminars which have been designed to provide practice and understanding of the range of syllabus content.  This will include study and activities addressing the needs of the Cambridge modules, Managing Information and Managing Teams.  Weekend seminars (there are about 6 during the year) will be held in Oxford and Cambridge.
  5. Submit to Cambridge two Written Assignments of 2000 - 3000 words, one for each of your courses - Managing Information and Managing Teams.  The work and activities for these key areas (modules) will address the application of knowledge to practice at UBS.  During the course of your year you will improve and acquire essential core competences particularly in the areas of communication and teamwork.  Upon successful assessment of each assignment you will receive a certificate from CIE.  Preparation for these Cambridge certificates (including the timely submission of respective assignments to CIE for marking) is an essential element in the award of the Mountbatten Certificate in International Business Practice.

In Summary - what will you receive if you pass all aspects of the Mountbatten Programme?

You will receive the Certificate in International Business Practice from the Mountbatten Programme, and two Cambridge University module certificates.  All three are independently assessed - that is, you are not required to obtain a pass in one to be eligible for a pass in another.

Over 1,500 Mountbatten Certificates have been issued in the decade since the Certificate was developed in 1994.  Cambridge Management qualifications are gaining currency with employment agencies and a growing number of employers.  Returning interns have found the Certificate to be a powerful resource as they enter the job market or embark on the next phase of their careers.  Apart from the documentary evidence of a productive year, the Certificate becomes, for many, an eye-catching focus for discussion in interviews, allowing former interns to present their London accomplishments.

Cambridge

What value is the Cambridge Accreditation?

The Mountbatten Institute which overseas the work of the three Regional Offices is an Associate Partner of University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

The Mountbatten Internship Programme in both New York and London has been formally accredited by CIE.  The North American Regional Office, where the programme originated, is the primary accredited centre and the European Regional Office, is a sub centre.  Both centres are accredited to deliver the Cambridge Management Awards and, in particular, the Cambridge International Diploma in Management at both Professional and Higher Professional Level.  At present only two modules of the Professional Level Diploma are available as part of Mountbatten's program of study.

The Cambridge Management Awards have been developed to meet the needs of the international market, acknowledging the growing number of employees whose career path takes them across both geographic and cultural boundaries.  UBS recognizes the Mountbatten academic programme and supports its Mountbatten interns as they pursue their academic studies.

How can you complete the full Diploma?

The Programme, at its expense, registers all interns as candidates for the Diploma in Management at Professional Level.  After completion of the Mountbatten Internship year the intern can complete the rest of the required modules modules plus a case study) to achieve the full Diploma in Management at Professional Level.  This further study and assessment will be undertaken at the intern's own expense.  This may be where there is a Cambridge accredited center, probably via distance learning.  The Mountbatten Programme can direct alumni interns to such providers for their evaluation, choice and costing.
