Mountbatten Institute - London Programme
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

Mountbatten's unique integrative learning curriculum combines a year's full time work experience at one of our sponsor companies in London with participation in an education and training program.  Before the Internship commences, interns are required to choose between either:

1. Certificate in International Business Practice
or
2. MBA in International Business Practice
Part I: Diploma in International Business Practice

Participation in either the Certificate or Diploma is mandatory.

All interns must complete all components of their chosen option in addition to their full time work placement with a London sponsor company.  Sponsor companies are fully committed to the academic program as it represents the quantification of both internal and external training as required by the UK Government.

Mountbatten academic events take precedence over sponsor or social commitments at all times.  If you feel that you are unable to commit wholeheartedly to either the Certificate or the Diploma, the Mountbatten Internship Programme would not be right for you.

CERTIFICATE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PRACTICE

The purpose of the Certificate program is to develop cultural awareness and understanding and to provide conditions where young graduates can perfect or acquire management skills and knowledge while improving personal and business competence.

To qualify for the award of the Certificate in International Business Practice, an intern must:

  • Formulate a Learning Contract, specifying expected goals and objectives for the internship year.
    • This provides the starter benchmarks against which the intern will measure their progress and development throughout the year.
  • Maintain a written Personal Development Journal which records experience, observations and reflection on progress.
    • For assessment, submit quarterly summaries referenced against the Learning Contract.
  • Complete a successful period of one year's full time Work Experience.
    • Assessment for this component is through two company appraisals of progress and individual performance against agreed competences.
  • Attend and participate in a schedule of approximately 6 weekend Seminars and 4-5 evening seminars which include:
    • A study of social, economic, historical and political aspects of the United Kingdom and Europe.
    • A focus on key aspects of business and the work experience.  This includes work place competency assessment and the submission of two written assignments, Managing Teams and Managing Information as part of the Cambridge International Diploma in Management at Professional Level.  The work and activities for these key areas (modules) will address the application of knowledge to practice at the workplace and in the seminars.  Interns will improve and acquire essential core competencies including communication and teamwork.  Successful interns will be awarded two module certificates (Managing Teams and Managing Information) from Cambridge International Examinations ("CIE").
    • Preparation and presentation of a Business Plan.
    • A review of personal and career development over the period of the Internship.

Weekend seminars are held in London, with one weekend in Dorset, and are chosen at the discretion of the Programme Director. Criteria for assessment of the seminar program include attendance, active participation in individual and group projects, oral presentations, submitted written assignments, and meeting all deadline requirements.

In Summary - What will you receive if you pass all aspects of the Mountbatten Certificate?

You are eligible for the Certificate in International Business Practice from the Mountbatten Institute, and two Cambridge module certificates - Managing Teams and Managing Information.  All three are independently assessed - that is, you are not required to obtain a pass in one to be eligible for a pass in another.

Over 2000 Mountbatten Certificates have been issued in the decade since the Certificate was developed in 1994.  Interns have found the Certificate to be a useful resource as they enter the job market or embark on the next phase of their careers.  Apart from the documentary evidence of a productive year, the Certificate becomes for many an eye-catching focus for discussion in interviews, allowing former interns to present their London accomplishments.

The CIE certificates have the advantage of an internationally recognized brand name, and an increasing number of centers across the world are offering the qualification.

Cambridge

What value is the Cambridge Accreditation?

The Mountbatten Institute (the umbrella organization to which the London and New York Mountbatten programmes belong) is an Associate Partner of University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).  www.cie.org.uk/aboutcie/centres/associate

The Mountbatten Internship Programme in both New York and London has been formally accredited by CIE.  The New York Organization, (1984 – present), where the Programme originated, is the primary accredited center and London, (1999 – present), is the associated center.  Both centers are accredited to deliver the Cambridge Management Awards and, in particular, the Cambridge International Diploma in Management at both Professional and Higher Professional Level.  At present only two modules of the Professional Level are available as part of the London Mountbatten program of study.

The Cambridge Management Awards have been developed to meet the needs of the international market, acknowledging the growing number of employees whose career path takes them across both geographic and cultural boundaries.  Full details of the CMA can be found at www.cie.org.uk.

Interns electing to enroll in the Certificate do not receive US academic credit.

MBA IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PRACTICE
PART I OF MBA: DIPLOMA IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PRACTICE

The Diploma carries US academic credit and forms Part I of a newly established MBA degree program, which has been developed by the Mountbatten Institute (the parent body of the Mountbatten Internship Programme) in conjunction with American International College, School of Business Administration (AIC) in Springfield, MA.  The AIC/Mountbatten MBA is the first MBA, which combines a year-long practical training internship in London with international business course work, leading to a Diploma in International Business Practice (Part I of the MBA).

The Diploma is designed for interns who are working in complex international organizations and need the basic tools of business understanding to perform their jobs effectively.  The program further assists the intern by relating what he or she experiences in the workplace to a larger global business perspective.

The Diploma syllabus covers:

  • Management Principles and Processes
  • Team Building, Leadership, and Organizational Behavior
  • Managing in the Global Economy
  • Business Communication and Information Management
  • Principles of International Finance and Accounting
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Principles of Self-Management and Professional Development

To qualify for the award of the Diploma in International Business Practice, an intern must:

  • Formulate a Learning Contract, identifying expected goals and objectives for the internship year.
    • This provides the starter benchmarks against which the intern will measure their progress and development throughout the year.
  • Maintain a written Professional Development Journal which records experience, observations and reflections on knowledge acquired in the workplace.
    • For assessment purposes students must submit quarterly narrative summaries referenced against the Learning Contract.  These are assessed by course tutors at AIC.  Please note that this component differs from the requirements of the Certificate program.  The Certificate requires a Personal Development Journal.  The Diploma's emphasis is on professional development and requires an on-going analysis of cultural exposure in the workplace.
  • Complete a successful period of one year's full time Work Experience.
    • Assessment for this component is through two company appraisals of progress and individual performance against agreed competences.
  • Complete 7 courses (as outlined above) of 3 credits each leading to the award of 21 graduate credits, which includes attending and participating in a schedule of weekend (approx. 20) and evening Modular Seminars and online tutorials which have been designed to provide practice and understanding of the range of syllabus content.
    • Criteria for assessment of the seminar program include attendance, active participation in individual and group projects, oral presentations and AIC externally set and submitted written assignments.
  • Participate in the development of a Business Plan, through a series of simulated group exercises.  Business plans will be assessed by AIC.

Interns electing to enroll in the Diploma must successfully complete all courses in order to receive MBA credit from AIC.

In Summary - What will you receive if you pass all aspects of the Mountbatten/AIC Diploma programme?

You will receive the Diploma in International Business Practice from the Mountbatten Institute and American International College, as well as a transcript from AIC's School of Business Administration listing successful completion of the courses, the grades received and the number of US academic credits awarded.  Interns who successfully fulfill the requirements of the Diploma will then be eligible to complete Part II of the MBA degree program in Bangkok, Thailand.  The combination of both Part I and Part II will constitute a complete MBA in International Business Practice awarded by American International College (AIC).

What value is AIC Accreditation?

The award of graduate credit from AIC is a unique expression of the partnership between the Mountbatten Institute and American higher education and represents a recent development for our organization.  AIC's School of Business Administration, based in Springfield, MA, oversees the delivery and exercises quality control over assessment and achievement for the Diploma in International Business Practice.  AIC graduate credits are fully transferable to AIC, in the event that interns wish to complete their MBA at AIC.  Acceptance of credits outside of AIC is dependent on individual university policies and degree requirements.  AIC is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), as well as by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).
